I have never seen anything suspect going on aside from some drinking teenagers at night. I think this park is gorgeous. What I wonder constantly is, why are the students from St. Francois using it as a school playground? Why is a City park a school park? I have never seen this happen at any other schools (take Connought and Devonshire for example). The kids from the school literally dominate the park and no one from the community dare go near it from 10-3 except when the students are inside (rarely since they come out in shifts). The result is that the community park is wasted on the school and does not benefit the community. Moreover the sheer traffic of all the kids and the relentless stomping around destroys the grass. The park looked awful before due to the high traffic. No city park sees that intense use. Now, the renovation is gorgeous and I am sure, soon to be ruined. I would like to see an end to the use by the school kids aside from the odd time or special event. The school should raise funds and build a proper school playground like every other school in the city.johttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08544629671906174983noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-969156847256652198.post-79144806101986592462010-09-21T19:43:48.918-04:002010-09-21T19:43:48.918-04:00Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, this is NOT a shelter in the style of the Mission, Shepherds, etc, but is a residential building for 20 elderly women and 22 not-necessarily-elderly women who have already passed through training and rehab services. The building is also staffed and supervised 24/7. We met with neighbours of their existing buildings and heard only positive things. As a result, I unreservedly welcome Cornerstone to the neighborhood.

It should be a huge step above some "low rent" rooming houses etc where people hang out bothering others. This is because the normal high signals can't be seen until a certain point under the underpass. The lower signal gives an advance warning to those further back that the light is red (or yellow, or green).

I'm not sure where this is in Gatineau, nor what is behind the camera in this shot, but presumably the same thinking is going on.Centretownerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03798054152996264061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-969156847256652198.post-7890962212360929272010-07-29T09:35:03.595-04:002010-07-29T09:35:03.595-04:00Used to live around the corner and bike through th...Used to live around the corner and bike through there every day (in the good seasons), and there were always at least a couple of cars parked there whose owners were walking their dogs on the little trails through the "woods" between that parking on Pontiac, Island Park and the ORP/Commuter Expwy. But you're right, I bet the vast majority of the cars pictured belong to cubicle farmers in Tunney's Pasture. I must admit that I don't remember seeing that many cars lined up at one time, I wonder if they assume (know?) that the enforcement is lax in mid-summer? (they may also all work some "compressed" 9:30-4:30 days in the summer -- not uncommon! -- so I might have just been too early and too late to see them on the way to and from the office)McChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15407797191899056459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-969156847256652198.post-56258573157501902902010-07-28T16:05:01.234-04:002010-07-28T16:05:01.234-04:00maybe completing the sidewalk connection will be p...maybe completing the sidewalk connection will be phase 3 of this project?McChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15407797191899056459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-969156847256652198.post-7547498814271610512010-07-28T10:45:24.406-04:002010-07-28T10:45:24.406-04:00I watched them this morning too. But note that peds will still have to get off the sidewalk and walk along the road or use a worn-in-the-grass goatpath since the sidewalks will NOT be extended to the corner. As Sylvia says, the button and pedestrian signals are there and fully operational, but are utterly inacessible to anyone who might have trouble crossing the high curb and very uneven loose gravel surface that seperates the road and the crosswalk button. As for cyclists, should they abandon their bikes to press the button? wait forever for a car (likely turning illegally onto the ORP) to activate the signal? or wait for a gap in the 80km/h traffic on the ORP to cross dangerously against the lights? (like I do, but don't recommend). Anyway, thanks for this Eric!

Cheers,McChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15407797191899056459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-969156847256652198.post-88870836571876699802010-07-27T10:53:00.241-04:002010-07-27T10:53:00.241-04:00There IS already a button for pedestrians to use t...There IS already a button for pedestrians to use to cross the parkway there. and it works and everything, there just might not be any markings on the roadSylviahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05394839937702768352noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-969156847256652198.post-82454316209295292752010-07-26T15:49:51.382-04:002010-07-26T15:49:51.382-04:00The plans for an Otrain or LRT station are still a...The plans for an Otrain or LRT station are still alive, but the city isn't spending any money to expand the Otrain service and LRT is far off in the future.
The farmer's market idea is still alive, but the preston BIA is having a tough time convincing the feds to talk about the warehouse complex.
I think it is more realistic to get a produce mart or something in the area.Eric Darwinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01042460139621819388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-969156847256652198.post-70375200638729553492010-07-26T15:27:19.740-04:002010-07-26T15:27:19.740-04:00What a strange place!
